Libourne, the Bastide !

Libourne, a town with a unique history and striking beauty, an unmissable place in the heart of Bordeaux wines.

A whole story of knights

Libourne is a royal fortified town founded in 1270 under the leadership of King Henry III of England. It was the knight Sir Roger de Leyburn, newly promoted to the honorary rank of King’s Lieutenant, who was entrusted with its construction (on the site of the ancient Gallo-Roman port of Condatis) and who gave it its name.

Over the centuries, Leyburn became Frenchified and became the city of Libourne.

Palme d’Or for its port!

Located at the confluence of the Isle and Dordogne rivers at the head of the Gironde estuary, the town of Libourne has the distinction of being the first maritime navigation port on the Dordogne, nearly 100 km inland! This unique location fostered its foreign trade and the development of a flourishing trade, of which wine was king, making it one of the most prosperous bastides in Aquitaine.

At that time, many ships departed from the port of Libourne for England, laden with barrels filled with the region’s wine.

In a port city, unique walks!

In recent years, the city has been reconnecting with its port identity thanks to the development of river tourism. Born from a confluence, it has itself become a confluence: of rivers, lands, languages, and people…

Today, it opens its doors to you, to delve into its unique history and striking beauty!
