Long dominated by the English, it was Sir Roger de Leyburn, a knight of the English court, who in 1270 was tasked with continuing the construction of this fortified town. You’ve probably already guessed: Sir Roger gave his name to the town, which is why Leyburn became Libourne.
A stroll through the Libournais market means strolling through the central square of the bastide, where market gardeners have gathered for 600 years. It’s a great opportunity to stock up on local produce to delight your taste buds!
Surrounded by the most prestigious vineyards of the Bordeaux region, the bastide town of Libourne is neighbored by Pomerol and Saint-Emilion (no less!). Needless to say, charming châteaux and estates await you right next door!
